How to use it
- Paste one or more BibTeX entries, or a DOI, arXiv id or ISBN.
- Press Convert. Entries are ordered alphabetically by first author, as a Works Cited list is.
- Copy with formatting into your document, or as plain text.
Why you'd use it
MLA is the style of the humanities, and the bibliography you have is in BibTeX because you wrote your last paper in LaTeX. Rekeying references between the two is slow and easy to get wrong in the details MLA cares about: the comma after the first author's name, et al. from the third author, vol. and no. before the numbers.
This converter applies those rules from the fields in the entry and leaves nothing to memory.
FAQ
Which edition of MLA?
MLA Handbook, 9th edition (2021). It is the same core-element format as the 8th edition, so the output is valid for both.
How are multiple authors written?
One author: Last, First. Two: Last, First, and First Last. Three or more: Last, First, et al.
What about the DOI or URL?
MLA 9 asks for the DOI as a link (https://doi.org/...) at the end of the entry, or the URL when there is no DOI. Both are included when the entry has them.
Can it format a book chapter or a thesis?
Yes: @incollection becomes a chapter in an edited book with the editors named, and @phdthesis or @mastersthesis becomes a dissertation entry with the institution.
